It depends on the stories. Many stories were written or told in order to illustrate a truth. Some stories are made up for the sheer purpose of enjoyment, and are only fantasy. However, even in such stories, the author sometimes subconsciously illustrates a number of truths. for example Tolkein insisted that The Lord of the Rings was pure fantasy and was not intended to illustrate or allegorize Biblical principles. However any Bible lover cand find a number of parallels. So our concept of truth cannot be based on stories, but stories can lead us to become interested in certain truths, and help us to visualize them.

Many stories are actually born of the truth, even the greatest fantasies and folk stories of the past have elements of truth in them. The truth we are meant to understand in those kinds of films, I believe anyway, is cultural truth. There are so many stereotypes about the culture in India, and yet these pictures somewhat defy those stereotypes in a way.

This sounds very much like an assigned essay question--and an easy one at that.
Here's a hint. Bollywood movies are not very much like real life. Did you watch the above movies? Do you think they are truthful?

I don't see a direct connection between the two. If anything stories show us that there is no truth. In life we deal only with fictions and invention - of ourselves and our world.
Stories show us emotional truth, but they are far from absolute. So it is that a movie or book - a movie especially due to its short duration - may thrill you in a given mood but not even move you in another. Inner truths are train passengers whose faces change with the passing terrain.
