Buy Alcatraz tickets on the website for the Blue and Gold Fleet and get the audio tour: it's more interesting than just walking around. You also get great views of the bay and the city from the trail around Alcatraz.

Golden Gate Park is nice and if you like museums, the deYoung is the big thing to see right now, after the renovation. The Japanese Tea Garden is nearby too, and it's beautiful.

Across the GG Bridge, go to Mt. Tam for some great trails in the Marin headlands. Again, gorgeous views of the bay and the city from there.

Beaches in the area are beautiful, but in case you didn't know, the water is COLD! It's all about admiring the view and the waves crashing on the rocks. Stinson beach, Ocean beach, all the way south to Pacifica's Linda Mar, and farther south through Half Moon Bay and Pescadero--they're all breathtaking. If you're a surfer, bring a wetsuit and surf around the Half Moon Bay area. If you're a damn good surfer, there's the famous Mavericks.

I go out to San Fransico a few times a year and have been for about 10 years. There is a lot to do there and you will not be able to do everything in a few days. There are some things I wanted to do my first time and still haven't done...

Depending on how many days you have, I would suggest Alcatraz. I had no desire to go to it and had to kill a day and decided to do it, and found it to be pretty cool.

There are many parks and trails. If you go across the GG bridge you can go to the Redwoods and even go a little further and hike up Mt Tam. Other towns that are cool are Sausalito and Tiburon...Other places in the city to see: Haight-Ashbury and Chinatown...Depending on time, go across the Bay Bridge and check out the people of Berkeley.

If you just get out and walk along the Embarcadero from the Bay Bridge to GG Bridge, you will find a nice trail and nice little road to walk down and will come upon some parks...there is a lot to see and do.

I spent two weeks in SF in 2004. I loved it. I recommend GG Bridge and Sausalito. Alcatraz is a must see. Take the audio-tour. China town is great. I had lunch there and it was awesome. Fishermen's Wharf is pretty cool, too. Take a cable car ride. There's so much to do and see, that a few days are not enough. I also liked going down Lombard Street. But after reading some other answers I'd like to go there again and do all the stuff they recommend.

Take a Cable Car from Union square to Fisherman's Wharf. It cuts through the middle of the City, up and down the hilly streets and affords a chance to see the City from a truly unique vantage point. From Fisherman's Wharf, walk to North Beach which is the Italian section. Great food and rich history. Birthplace of the Beat Poets and Beatniks of the 50' and 60's. Visit CityLights Bookstore on Columbus Ave. where it all began.

I really enjoyed the Alcatraz tour. You can also catch a Giants baseball game, if they happen to be playing that late in the month. The Pier (#39, I think) is cool- there is an aquarium and there are a lot of neat shops/restaurants there.

OK, Golden Gate Park for outdoor excursions and...just walking the hilly terrain and site seeing is a challenge I think...you will see street vendors everywhere...just do a city search of activities...have fun

I would go to Alcatraz (night tour). It is so much fun and exciting. Bring lots of Sweaters, it gets cold at night.
