I told my mother one day that I know a way to make extra money by walking around and collecting cans. She said I wouldn't want to seem the the town bum. Was this very assaulting? I passed two cans on the side of the road today-that could of been 10 cents in my pocket. She was picking change she found while walking-couldn't you consider this the same thing. Someone needs to pick them up-i know people that have made good money making this their hobby. What do you think? Do you feel this is okay or is my mother right saying that i would look like the town bum? Don't you think it was not good for her to insult me in this manner. I'm a 27 year old woman and I definitely to not dress like a bum.

I agree that collecting cans for recycling is a good thing. And so is standing up for what you believe in. If you take the cans off the streets, the streets look better, you free up space in our landfills, and you make some extra cash. All it takes is time and effort.
Some people, like your mom, won't share your beliefs about this. But if you believe in what you're doing, you should stand up to anyone who says otherwise, even if they ridicule you.
Just be careful out there. Watch for traffic, stray animals, etc., and make sure you're always in well-lighted areas.

I don't think that I would concider picking up cans on the side of the road as a means to generate extra money. Sure there is some monetary reward in it. I guess a way to approach this is to maybe involve your entire family in it and have a day set aside that you collect cans. Maybe instead of making it a monetary thing you can make it an environment issue and just be doing your part to help the world out. Maybe you can start a neighborhood recycling program and you lead it and invole the entire community. Have the neighbors set aside recyclables and you collect it and turn it in for the money. Two wins i see with that. I say go for it, but you may want to avoid the dumpster diving.

Do what makes you happy. Around here nobody really would get paid to do that kinda thing, the city usually leaves it up to people for community service or jail workers to do all that kinda stuff....(Myrtle Beach).......but if your area will pay you for it, go right for it, I'm sure you could make a few bucks out of it since this world is overflowing with litter. If anything, I think people will think you're just nice and helping out the environment..........not a "bum".

Didn't you hear the story on Dateline of the couple that put two children through college by sifting through trash in the middle of the night collecting cans for money? You just might be laughing all the way to the bank.... good luck

who cares what your mom or anyone else thinks. you need to do it for you if you really want. i don't think you would look like a bum, I think you would look like someone collecting cans. i can't make any judgement past that.. who knows if you are doing it to pick up litter, for money, or any other reason. and even then.. who cares? (5 cents a can is a lot! they pay 25 cents a POUND of aluminum cans here.. and a pound is alot of cans!)

Just consider it as doing your bit for the environment ... recycling waste is a good thing and if you can earn extra money for it then so much the better - it's better than walking the streets ;-)
I would ask though - at 27 surely you have a job which provides a decent income anyway? Maybe your idea would be better aimed at kids?

Stop being a wuss....go pick up your cans, and when you get your money, take Mom out to dinner when she is all full and fat, tell her where the money came from and state clearly....I may be the town bum, but I am FULL!!!

27 and your leting your mom bug you .grow up and live your life as you see fit .when i see people colecting cans i am glade we have folks that need the cash .it is how they dress that makes me think there bums .we have two old men collecting cans they own there own homes and have nice cars but ever moring they go for a can round up .

I don't see anything wrong with it. I have a good job and I still take bottle and cans back to the store. I figure it cost me for the beverage so why can't I get a refund on my money spent or on anyone else's for that matter. Another man's trash is another man's treasure :)
