I am 37. Have been in sales my whole adult life. I am pretty good at it. By some peoples accounts I am fantastic at it. I happen to HATE it!!! If I did not have to make a living, I would dedicate my life to helping others. For example, I have a vision of organizing and raising funds to feed and clothes people. Starting first in my immediate community and then expanding out into other communities in the world. There is no reason why ANYONE should go hungry or be without dignified clothing. BUT.....yeah, there goes that BUT again. But finding myself having to work all day to make a living does not allow me to do this.

Have any of you found yourselves in this dilema? What have you done about it? Any real, practical suggestions?

I too am not performing my life's passion. I work with veterans and active duty military personel. The work is fulfilling and I truly feel needed and appreciated in my job, but..., it can be very draining. My dream job would be to do interior design or become a chef. I have been trying to convince myself to go back to school to persue one of these dreams, even if I do it as just a hobby. I have to admit, it is a little scary to think about a career change at this stage in my life.

But, enough about me. I think it is great that you aspire to do work that is beneficial to those less fortunate. It is awesome to do what makes you happy and I feel that people that have the good fortune of doing what they love for a living are the luckiest people in the world. Make time for your passion. If you would like to help others, set aside some time on the weekend that you can devote to your passion. The best of luck to you in your decision.

I like my current job, I just wish I could do it permanently. I am a graphic artist and do page layouts.

While I was in college, I did something exciting and scary. I, along with one other guy in school helped to start a newspaper. During deadlines, I would stay at the school until 3 or 4 in the morning, but I loved it. It started small and now it has a sizable staff and circulation.

If your life's passion is to help others, maybe you should start out small by volunteering locally in the evenings and weekends and see where it will goes from there. Good luck.

adopt a family through your church or shelter....off and on I have
helped one family at a time...sometimes with free evening child care .....parents also need a break from the stress .....sometimes with clothes......once after going to a church I was able to obtain a FREE house for a family of 12.
Right now I am providing free childcare for a couple while they job search. Sometimes people just need a ride to the grocery store.
I am an not a church goer.........but I find that people in need often go there for help.....If there is a God, I do not think he is judging the decisions people made that turned out bad....I think he is watching the ones around them...to see how they are responding.

If I were you I would go back to school part time. Get a degree in a field that will help you to accomplish your dream and still make a living. It is a fact of life that people need to make money and even if you want to help people you still have to recognize that fact. So try something different that will utilize your current skills and still help other people.

If you're good at sales, you should have a more-than-adequate income. Make yourself a 10-year plan to save and invest enough to be financially independent. Then you can pursue your helping goals, without worrying about making money.
