because a lot of parents look at compromise as giving the child their way. i have 3 kids and their father will never compromise...it is his way or nothing and he gets mad at me for spoiling them when i compromise.
i think kids need th get their way sometimes...they have to know that the home is not a dictatorship and i feel that if your kids are afraid of you they wont come to you with their problems in the future,

I have been involved (sister in-law) with some very negative parenting especially when it comes to the teenage years. I think - my own opinion - stated as a mother of 4 ... that too many parents forget what it was like to be that age and/or they remember all to well what havoc they created and can't stand the thought of their child doing what they had once done. The other factor in negative parenting - once again based on my own opinion is "My child does nothing wrong" attitude. Therefore stricter guidelines are put in place as the parent thinks this will ensure that there child is "kept best". In the mean time the child generally tends to rebel. I think it's all a matter of ego when it comes to parenting. I was raised in a strict home and find myself to be more carefree?, i guess one would say with my own children. My husband on the other hand was pretty much allowed to do what he wanted when he wanted and as a parent he is the opposite. We make a good team as we have and understand our weakness and strengths and can communicate so as not to step too hard on each others toes!

Stefan, Adolescents need to understand that their parents have been there too and at times r simply trying to help them avoid going down the wrong path. However, parents have to understand that their children have to experiences life to grow and make choices. Just be there to catch them if they fall. Thanks for the question. I am a retired youth worker too. Hail to YOUTH. Never say I told u so

Who knows WHY SOME parents are so NEGATIVE???
My parents are still that way and I am 44 yrs old! They have nothing positive to say and if the DO it is always followed up with something negative. It's a NO-WIN situation with them.

besause some parents are strict as were there parents. they feel that a tight ship does not sink and that they are the captains of that ship and must go down with it if that should be. So to prevent that they control until they cause the crew to revolt.

Because parenting is very frightning, and most people were never taught by their own parents how to be selfless.
I think a lot of parents are overwhelmed and insecure about themselves, and that gets projected onto their kids.
its a shame.

Because they were once young and they tend to be harsh with you so you won't make mistakes and wrong decisions (if any) like they did. They ARE trying to protect you.

Your guess is probably better than mine. I've got a lot of questions why parents do what they do.
