Ipswich were actually voted the best team in the whole of Europe by journalists in the 1980-81 season. OK, so getting a journalist award isn't nearly as prestigious as winning an actual trophy. But consider the facts:
- They finished runners-up in the league, and would have won it if they had a bigger squad.
- They won the UEFA Cup
- They reached the FA Cup Semi-Final
- They played a brand of attacking, passing football that tore Michel Platini's St Etienne's team apart 4-1 away and 3-1 at home.
- Frans Thijssen and John Wark won the respective player of the year awards that season.
So yes, in that season alone, a good case could be made for Ipswich being the best team in England. People might say Aston Villa as they won the league, but Ipswich beat them in all three games that they played each other. Liverpool won the League Cup and European Cup that season, but only finished sixth in the league.

no early 80's was Aston Villa. Ipswich were runners up in 81. Villa European champs in 82. our time will come again mark my words

Liverpool was the best team in ENGLAND in the 80's. winning the league championship, FA Cup & the UEFA European Cup in 1981 & 1984.
