I always set my email out of office, even if I'm just away a few hours. I don't deal with external clients & all the people who contact me sit in my office. My colleagues say I'm being anal, I think I'm being consciencious, what does everyone else think?

I think you are being consciencious. Even if they sit in your office they may not know you are out, even if it is only for a few hours.

I think you are being anal especially if you don't deal with clients. If all the people who contact you are in your office then why bother? Don't they know when you are gone? Are you so important that being out of the office a few hours is stopping production?

I'd say, in your situation, that it's a bit OTT, but at least everyone can trust you to be reliable and always let them know where you are - that's valuable in an employee, if a little anal! It'll stand you in good stead when you do deal with exernal people.

However, I'd compromise a bit if I were you - if you're only out for a morning or afternoon, then people can wait for your response without neding a bounceback. Try not to clog up their inboxes with out of office replies - I have to say I find them a little irritating myself!

I wouldn't set my e-mail to Out of Office if I was only going out for a few hours - just tell the people round about me I'll be back in a few hours.

You're going a little overboard by putting an out of office reply on if you're only gone a few hours. I only use out of office if I'm gone for more than one day.

Definitely OTT. Couldn't you talk to your colleagues and let them know you're away from your desk which I sure they know already. If something really important doesn't come up I'm sure they will contact you some other way.
