Report says scientists say we must return to the moon. Why?

I'm not opposed to space exploration and was a fan of Gerard O'Neill's idea of cities in space. I know that space exploration has given tremendous strength to technological development that have radically improved our lives. A late-uncle who had a machine shop that worked with the Apollo program said the biggest technology improvements in machining at that time came because of auto racing and NASA. Electronics, meanwhile, have soared on technology advances begun for space. Even medicine has had quantum-leap moments in part spurred by NASA needing to understand the humans they send up.

But why MUST we return to the moon?

The moon would be an awesome place to set up a space port, think of it as a stepping stone to the stars and outer space. Launching nasa/ esa rockets and deep space exploration vehicles would be much easier from the moon as there is very little gravity and atmosphere. Lauching manned rockets from earth is extremely expensive, difficult, dangerous and dependent on good weather.

A space port could be constructed using lunar materials and it could serve as a earth to moon port as well, for nasa astronauts as well as for tourists visting the moon. All in all it just makes common sense to do this.

I found the original moon landings thrilling to watch live. Surely each generation should have something like that to watch. The space shuttle has provided a pretty poor show by comparison, it's time for some big rockets and real landings again.

a good reason to go this time is because many people don't believe they really went there the first time.

But if Iraqi fuel is in the rocket, does that mean Iraq should get partial credit for the moon landing? Like, can it be considered an American/Arab enterprise?

makes sense they create a base on the moon and use it to store materials for use on the international space station ro to carry out repairs to space shuttle. with this in mind development of s-t-o-l space craft would be an advantage
