The main function of the eyebrows is to prevent moisture (mostly sweat and rain) from dripping into the eye (a critical organ). The typical curved shape of the eyebrow (with a slant on the side) and the direction in which eyebrow hairs are pointed, make sure that moisture has a tendency to flow sideways of the eyes, mainly along the side of the head but also along the nose. The protruding brow ridges of modern humans could also still play a role in this process. Eyebrows also prevent debris such as dandruff and other small objects from falling into the eyes, as well as providing a more sensitive sense for detecting objects being near the eye, like insects. Eyebrows also have a facilitary function in communication, strengthening expressions like amazement or anger.

Along with eyelashes, they protect the eyes from sweat, dust and other foreign objects. I got alopecia universalis when I was 27, that means I lost all hair on my body. The first year was hellish, as I needed to develop the reflexes for keeping dust and sweat from going in my eyes. Eyebrows and eyelashes serve a purpose that will only become truly apparent after you lost them.

I think it's a throw-back to evolution- served an important purpose at one time. Think about it- when we were still "cave men" the brow ridge was very prominent and so, would have been more vulnerable to things like frost bite. So maybe we retained the hair on our brows as protection from the weather. I also think that keeping sweat, dirt, etc from going in the eyes would be important, back in that time- especially when hunting- no distractions or impediments would make for a more successful hunt.

I.m with you vince. I got the same problem. It's amazing just how much filtering they do. And the lash acts as a warning system to warn you to close your eye when a dust particle is about to hit. No lash no warning. Hard on eyes. Wear shades all the time.

I have an aquaintance who lost all the hair on his body and he said that you would be surprised how much junk falls into your eyes (sweat, rain, dust, etc...) without your eyebrows there.

they protect the eyes. From rain, from the sun, also from blows (when there is a fight most people come with bleeding eyebrows, rather than wounded eyes).

thank you for asking this! I had a debate with my partner last night about this very question. I presumed it was to stop dirt, sweat and general crap from getting into your eyes and as most people have said that, I now know! so again cheers :o)

Too stop the sweat from your forehead entering your eyes. Eyelashes are for the same reason and to stop dust and grit.
