Energy created by releasing the energy in matter. There is always a radioactive by-product. This is potentially dangerous material. That's why some people are against this method of producing energy. However, it does take the burden off using the limited resource of fossil fuels - which has to also be taken into consideration. There are also "green" alternatives like wind and solar power - although it may be impractical to obtain so much power in a concentrated area via these means

From the political point of view, nuclear energy allows to build the ultimate weapons. The physicists concern in Project Manhattan was "Is it big enough?" [to end all wars].
Rational political leaders will not use it, because retaliation would follow, but fringe terrorist groups may consider it.

By nuclear energy I'm assuming you mean usable for humans. It's derived from nuclear fission which produces heat, which heats water producing steam to drive turbines generating electricity.
