i dunno about 'thousands' of years ago. because they're made of crystal it's difficult to date them, because crystal is old and dating is now relient on guessing what tools were used to make them; and when those tools existed. Could be some dedicated polisher from 30 thousand years ago, or could be modern people trying to revitalise something ancient.
If you look at other artefacts and art around the dates that are speculated, nothing closely resembles a human as much as these things do. These were specifically made to look like human skulls. and other artefacts don't come close. early humans were more concerned with representation than exact replication. They had a greater connection to the spirit world than the tangible world here, and the people in it.
The crystal skulls, just don't kind of 'fit', with ancient times.
some of them are really eerie, some look overly realistic, and some are just strange. The Mitchell-Hedges skull bothered me the most - it's a very clear crystal and a very fine finish. That's a lot of work.
There's a lot of speculation that they're used in ancient ritual, which is probably true, because heck - why else would someone carve a skull out of a giant hunk of crystal?
Maybe people were trying to invoke something from the past, given many were found near mayan and aztec ruins... but that's just more speculation : )

Hmm... your link didn't work, so I looked on Google. The skulls are not "made with no visible marks" have no documented "uncanny properties" and are less than 1000 years old. Oh, and there are only 4 or 5 of this type in existence.

I have seen these before and all I can say is that it is yet another mystery that modern man cannot explain.
The fact that they are so perfectly made leads me to believe that they were not created by humans; if they were created. There could always be the possibility that they are actually the "bones" from a superior type of human that once lived on the earth.

Goes further to prove of a civilisation before us, that is far more advanced than we are now. Many other evidences eg batteries, cave drawings of astronaut in space shuttle, iron pillar that have has not rusts all through the years (all of the mentioned hundreds of years old!).
