its possible, but very illegal to tap into someone's internet without their knowledge. Plus if its a business I am sure they have security on the wireless that will require you to enter a password.

1. If your laptop has a built-in wireless adapter, and it should be able to pick up any wireless signal within range. 2. Broadband access can be provided via 2 methods - wired or wireless (or both). Assuming that your flat has the necessary wireless equipment installed for all tenants, your laptop should be able to pick up the wireless signal. If not, you may need to get a wireless router. 3. Even if you get a wireless signal, it may not be free. That is, you may need to subscribe to the service and sign on to your account before you get internet access. Think of it as having a telephone set. If you do not subscribe to a telephone service, you won't be able to make calls even if you plug it into the wall socket. On the other hand, I understand some property developments may package free internet access to attract tenants. If that's the case, brilliant! But because it would be a shared network, be sure to install firewall software on your laptop to protect yourself against attacks.

THE PLACE YOU WORK... no! no! no!
Hooking into another persons wireless network is bad enough. It is a crime called "theft of service" and can result in civil charges against you. Even if you have the permission of the owner of the network, you do not have the permission of the ISP, and in my state you can be sued for up to $1000 a day for stealing their service.
But hooking into somebody's WORK network will get you years and years in prison and a criminal record that follows you for the rest of your life. It is called hacking and is illegal - big time. You will have the FBI knocking on your door in the middle of the night to seize your computer, handcuff you, and take you off to an 8x10 cell for the next 20 years. I have seen it happen time and time again.
If you are doing this from your place of business, you place the business in a position to be sued also. You can and would be fired for using their equipment to hack into someone else's network.
DO NOT hook into someone elses network!!!

They might have wireless internet, but many companies are using password protection to keep others from "lo jacking" into their internet connection.
Can't you get an internet connection from your work place? That is to say, if they require you to access the internet from work, they should be the ones to provide the connection.
Good luck.

Most likely what is going on is that your place of work either doesn't have wireless or their wireless doesn't transmit its network SSID. Compared to the wireless network you pick up next door which is most likely a home user that purchased a wireless router and did not bother to configure it in any way.
Even wireless home routers have tha ability to stop transmitting the SSID of the network, but this is purely up to the discretion of the admin.

Technically it is possible if the wireless connection isn't secured. Legally it is considered theft of services unless you ask them for permission to use it. Of course, if your company doesn't ahve internet access you may be violating some of your companies policies as well.

With their knowledge, yes. Transmitter power may need to be increased to allow signal 'through walls. Best if there is a wireless router permanently on.

It can be done but people use wap keys to stop this. Like my self when u set up your wirless you have the option to set it up. And also i can see who is using it at any time.
If they have not set up a wap key then they are stupid and you can get on.
