If it was during schooldays, there is Classmates.com or REunion.com, though you have to pay for the service to contact other members but, you can see some info.
You can try googling their names. Or the direct method, if you find their old phone numbers try calling and see if they are still there.

How about trying Friends Reunited or an advert in the local paper?

If you visdit friends reunited they have this facility on there for free.
You just type in your address and years there and the rest should take care of itself...providing your friends are registered there also.
