The Roanoke settlement was an early attempt to truly colonize the North American mainland. Most of the earlier trials were more in the nature of exploration, treasure-hunting, or to establish military and/or trading outposts. The Spanish had been doing this for some time before the 1587 voyage to what is now Manteo Island in North Carolina; what made this English expedition unique was the fact that it was not comprised solely of men. Whole famlies came with the intent to stay and to establish a settlement as we usually have use of the term today.

Of course, no one knows for certain just what became of these pioneers, because when ships came from England two or three years after the colonists set up housekeeping (primitive though it might have been, even by their own standards), they had vanished. The reason it took so long for the ships to come back was due in part ot the attempt that Spain made to invade England in 1588.

Ralph White commanded both expeditions, and it must have been terrible for him to find no trace of the colony on his second trip: his daughter, Eleanor Dare, had given birth to a daughter who was named Virginia shortly after the 1587 landing. Imagine having been separated from your daughter and newborn graddaughter for several years, only to find both of them gone when you returned.

Theories concerning the fate of the so-called "Lost Colony" include rhose of it having been wiped out by the Native Americans in the vicinity, of an epidemic killing all of the settlers, or--my personal opinion being this one--that they were simply absorbed into the various tribes in the area.

Homework assignment? Try "Googling" Roanoke and see what you get. If all else fails, go to a public library and ask for an encyclopedia. Do your own work!

I assume you are talking about the lost colony. The first settlement in the New World that disappeared without a trace.
