Either on the left or Right, or Both, or top, or bottom.
Seriously, there's no right or wrong way to do it. I'm a professional web developer myself, and I've seen it being used anywhere.
In terms of onscreen placement, it's easier for you to place it exactly if it's on the left or top part of the screen. The right side is a little harder because people have screens set to different resolutions..

Back in the early days, you mostly saw navigation on the top, left, and sometimes right. There is a new trend where people are putting the navigation at the bottom of the page, right above the footer. It sounds kind of strange, but once you get used to it, the bottom navigation actually works well.
So, I guess it doesn't really matter where you put your navigation as long as it is accessible. Just be creative with it.

There is no right or wrong way to do it, usually though there is the primary navigation at the top (like YA's ask answer discover), then a secondary navigation to the left (YA's categories), some sites also have a set of controls on the right to add filters and further control things that just don't fit on the left, then there are usually maintenance type links in the footer (YA's terms of service, etc.)

There is no rule. Whatever fits into the page design. Usually it is at the top or left.
