I was told I was told I might need some jumpers or something.

Yes, you need to set the jumper on the new DVD drive.

Take a close look at where you plugged in the ribbon cable when you installed it. You will see a set of 6-8 pins just to the side of it. They are marked MA SL CS - Master Slave and Cable Select.

Chance are you need to set the new drive to SL.

Yep jumpers on the back of your drive(S) when you install a new one make sur one is MASTER and one is the SLAVE on the primary IDE slot then you can also have a Master and a Slave on the Secondary IDE. Assuming you only got one Harddrive that would be the master and your CD?DVD whatever should be your Slave however if your Harddrive has csl selected it might be a good idea to also select csl (CABLE SELECT) on the CD/DVD.
Also make sure your BIOS is enabled to AUTO settings because sometimes the Secondary IDE master slave are disabled just to stuff you up so you have to go to the Shop and be charged for doing so.
