Anytime she speaks to me she lies, all day every day. She will call me from work to lie about any and everything. She knows that I know that she knows that she is lying, and won't stop. I get so mad I could explode. Why do people in general feel the need to lie, especially when it is unessesary !!! ???

Why do you talk to her? Seriously, if she is a habitual lier, then just tell her straight that until she deals with her honesty, she won't be a part of your life.

Your sister has a deep psychological problem if she is a compulsive liar. I am a special ed teacher and I have worked with kids who have this as a major emotional disturbance. Unfortunately there is not very much effective research or treatment -- at least not that I was able to find. I would recommend CONSTANT and RELENTLESS confrontation... it may seem cruel, but what commonly happens is that people deal with compulsive liars by learning to avoid them or ignore them. If you were to calmly make regular statements like "That isn't true." "You are telling me a lie." "You seem to have a compulsive lying habit" ... eventually you will either drive your sister away or she will start to break down and face her disability. Of course, denial is the obvious symptom that stops progress. One boy that I worked with was so obviously miserable with his own life that my heart really went out to him. He had NO friends. It was always a temptation to pretend to believe his lies in order to give him some affirmation. The little bit of psychological research does suggest that compulsive liars feel that they HAVE to lie in order to save themselves from unbearable consequences. It would like being a Jew during the holocaust and the gestapo asks you, "Where are your children?" Compulsive liars get their wires crossed so that they think they have to constantly manufacture escape routes. They are really very desperate, sad individuals. You are probably a really good sister in that you even bother to keep on trying to communicate.

Here's a suggestion I gave to one parent of a child with a lying compulsion. I had the parent tell the child to DELIBERATELY tell a lie and then admit to it. They picked a designated time for this "game". Here's how it worked. At the designated time, the girl called her mom on the phone and told a lie that they both knew was coming. The girl happened to choose to say that she accidentally cut her thumb -- this was not true, but that was the plan. The mother said a key phrase like "Oh my goodness, did you cut your thumb?" Then the girl said, "No, I didn't cut my thumb - that was a lie." Then the mother said "Thanks for telling me the truth honey, I feel close to you when you tell me the truth." After that they continued playing this game at designated times. Eventually the plan was to see if the daughter would ever "admit to a lie" that slipped out when she was NOT planning to tell a lie. It was hoped that that would be a turning point and the girl would start to weigh and balance her own communications. Because the girl's lying problem was not as severe as what most compulsive liars have, the problem went away before this technique really got applied, but I think it may be a good approach. BEST WISHES.

when children are young they go through a lying stage where they use imagination versus truth, or they mix the two together.
she might have never grown out of this stage. If anything, to jump start her turn around when she is ready make sure you always tell the truth because in this way you'll be setting a good example and if this continues to irritate you than you might need to lessen or limit your conversations with her.

XXXXXXXXXXX lying for some people turns into a desease. Once it starts, it takes over your life and controls your world. Your sister has told so many lies that she's choking. She probably don't know how to stop know. Talk to your parents. Maybe they can break her from this. Good luck hun.

Why do you constantly subject yourself to this? If you're going to keep talking to her, then you are stuck with the lies and have no right to complain. If you really want to do something about it, explain to your sister that you will not be lied to and then the next time she starts in, say "Have to go, have a great day. Bye" and hang up the phone!

She is seeking attention. Some people never stop doing this. You need to lay down some guidlines for her. Tell her to stop telling you stupid lies or you will have to not answer the phone when she calls.

i have a friend that does all the time too! I mean its not that serious! She can lie about what she had from breakfast, whats shes wearing or any other lil crap, it makes me feel like shes trying to play me but I've told her that i no longer believe anything she says.

I think they do that because they are afraid of coming across stupid or they want to seem perfect? I dunno, what I do know is that its annoying and make me want to hurt her feelings so bad she'll want to commit suicide

she either hates you or don't care about you at all.because she knows you are aware that she's aware tha she's lying so it's not that she's protecting herself by lying.so it must be she is just compulsive or she just givesa f@uck and just lie because she doesn't see a reason not to,or is just an experiment or she's really sick.you choose. XD

Suggestion..............STOP answering her phone calls and tell her that unless she starts telling the truth, then not to call you. I had to do the same with my brother. Hard to do, but was necessary and he is 34.
