Wouldn't an "autobiography" of a tree involve tracing its roots and looking at its family tree?

You might (with imagination) be able to write the biography of a tree.

But an autobiography is something you write about yourself - a tree's autobiography could only be written by that self-same tree.

for it to be an autobiography, you need to pretend you are the tree. otherwise it is just a biography if you are writing about the tree.
introduction:
It has been a long time since the children have climbed up on my branches. Now that it is Autum, I face a long lonely time of the year. No longer do the kids come running to play under my limbs. Noone to sit under my shade and enjoy the quiet. My leaves, like little offspring, will wither and leave me, alone and bare...........
hope this helps

That sounds like a fun assignment. Speaking as the tree, follow its progress from a tiny seed being dropped by a squirrel or falling from the mother tree. Describe what you see around you, what you hear. Include all your senses in this assignment. Perhaps some historic events happened in view of t his tree, like Indian battles or peace treaties. Perhaps the tree witnesses a crime, or a child being born. Describe any dangers the tree faces, such as storms, fires, lumberjacks...Have the tree express emotions like a human. This is obviously a fantasy assignment, but I think t hey are trying to get you to use your imagination. Good luck!

Isn't an autobiography when the tree writes the book itself? How about this:

"I fell to my death so you could hold these wasted pages in your hands..."

Be sure you interview the tree before you begin, but that's a start.

Sounds like a nice assignment. Check out "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein to get an idea of how a tree might feel throughout its life. I included the link below. Be careful not to copy, because your teacher will know this book.
