You need to know many things, but first go and check what are the required vaccinations to be made before you go, it is of vital importance. Then I advice you to contact somebody who live there. Best of luck!

Hmmm. I lived there for four years. (I am an oyibo ... ha ha). Nigeria is a very dangerous place. If you do not have contacts there ... like a company or group with cars and drivers and "safe" houses, I would not go. Lagos is scairy. Taxi drivers will take you out "somewhere" and rob you of everything and just leave you there ... or in extreme cases kill you. Don't ge me wrong, not all Nigerians are evil. They can be very friendly (seeming) and helpful ..... until 10 niara is on the "table" . Money is king in Nigeria and "everyone" scams or steals for money if they think they can get away with it. food is an aquired taste (that i never aquired) there .... lots of pepper in some of it .. like pepper soup. Health standards are very low ... or non existant. It is really too bad. Nigeria has everything to make a strong and prosperous country. Water, Oil, fertile lands, and abundance of natural resources, and most importantly 120 million intelligent and fairly healthy people. The main problem is NO JUSTICE. Most all the rich are crooks (mostly in the government). Nigeria is not for the faint of heart or casual tourist.

Olivia, Nigeria is nice but not really for the faint of heart. Even if the OP is from Detroit, they will need to be more than streetwise if their taxi breaks down near the Oshodi market on the way to VI. The food is also an acquired taste for most (I'm actually dying for suya now that I'm thinking of this), but yes the 98% of people you meet who are not criminals are very nice & hospitable. Unfortunately the 2% usually find you first.

I think a lot depends on what the person will be doing and where they will be doing it.

there might be con-artists there, but if you're street-wise you have no problems...it also depends on where're you're coming from and what you look like.....

if you're going for a vacation....make sure to visit the obudu ranch in calabar (very exotic), the nitelife in lagos is unparalled (ikoyi, ikeja and victoria island are the places to be) and don't forget the beaches...., there's also abeokuta and badagry (if you're looking for a very all-rounded dip into the yoruba culture), northern states is very volatile (sharia laws and all) but as i sd if you're just a tourist you could see the vast and beautiful palaces up in kaduna, kano and maiduguri, and finally there's abuja (the capital) the most civilised state in the country..there's a couple of classy clubs there and all the businesses and govt offices have thier headquaters there....

the country is very, very hospitable (you might wanna be able to differiate the good ones, from the ones trying to exploit you)

there are a lot of hotels, motels and inn everywhere, be carefull where you stay at...the pple are not angels...i'd advice, nicon noga, hilton, le'meridien or bolingo...they're other good ones also...

it really helps if you know someone there...before you get there

if you don't...well as i sd earlier you just have to be streetwise...most pple are very open and smile all the time and you might be able to tell someone who's wishing you harm...

it's a good idea to have a car on hand in lagos...cabs are very expensive and you often run into cons and really horrible pple who drive those...especially those that take the route from the international airport to any part of the city....they'll know you're a foreigner and that's really not an information you want such stranger to be privy to.....

you should taste the foods also...egusi, ogbono, banga and utazi soups among others (fresh vegetables, fresh fish meats and poulty and indegenous spices) ...try zobo drink from the north

all in all....the place is fun with beautiful hospitable pple and food you can die for...
