How do you get to them?? If it's at the start up thing (which I'm guessing is at the start with all the text on a black screen), how do you get to keep that up.. because it just goes before I get a chance to do anything.

usually either the DELETE key or f10 key. Could be any F key but try the ones i suggest first. hold each down once the keyboard has been recognised otherwise you will probably get a keyboard error!

if you look closely at the screen while its booting you will see it say press *** to enter the bios. there are a few keys that it could be depending on your pc. f2, f8, f10, f12, del. while the computer is booting just start tapping all of them if you cant see where it tells you. you wont ruin anything by tapping the different keys. once you are in i would be very careful about the setting you change. make sure you know what you are doing before you save and exit. good luck

There are hardware and software settings. Jumpers and switches on the board before you power up. Not for the inexperienced.
Software settings: when you start the pc you should see see a message something like "Press del to enter set-up" - sometimes it'll be f2. You may have be quick to catch it. Better still, get someone in to show you what to so!

Bios settings are a bit hard to understand if you have no experience but you can learn by trial and error the best way is to note all the settings eg.write them down to reset if necessary.
when your computer starts press the "delete" or F1 or f10 key" depending on your Bios manufacturer.
once you in the Bios you can se a host of things and usually by pressing the F1 you get Help as well.
I did it years ago and **** myself but now I know 80% of the time I make changes there I know what I'm doing.
Take care!

When the computer starts up and that test screen displays all the settings detected you can press the "Pause" button on the top right area on your keyboard.
If you miss your chance just press "Control + Alt + Delete" and this will force the computer to restart immediately giving you another chance to hit "Pause" to see the screen results.

The start up thing you are talking about is the BIOS. Please don't be offended, but judging by the way you asked the question, you probably should not adjust the BIOS yourself.

If however you really insist on it, then most mb's allow you to enter the BIOS by pressing F2 on Del during boot up. Just watch the screen and it will tell you.
