In the long run, you will save money by switching.
Perhaps you can sell your fairly newer electric water heater and cut your initial loss somewhat.

Well personnally I think you should. Gas is cheaper and its more efficient. Electric heaters take too long to heat and end up costing you in electricity and excess water. I think that if you don't have a big family, then a tankless gas heater would be ideal. It does not have a pilot which means it uses gas only when you turn on the pipes. Furthermore it takes only six to ten seconds before you get hot water. It works with just two d-cell batteries which means that you can have warm water even when the power goes out. I have had one for more than three years now and the savings have been great.

If you have gas already piped into the house, then a gas water heater is more efficient. It will however cost more.
But consider this.....the electric company buys gas to produce steam to turn a generator to produce electricity. Why would you want to pay for electricity when you can get the heat without the inefficiency of the powe rcompany?

Calculate the price of a gas water heater. Subtract the number of years you have owned yours from 12(buy new wh every 12)
Divide that number into the heaters price
Thats the amount you will be spending extra every year.Personally if you don,t have a big family I,d stick with the electric until you buy new.

i would not change heaters yet..... the reason is this... u still have a good 4 yrs of warranty on ur eletric heater...after the warranty then if u want make the change.. it will heat up faster but u also have the cost of gas along with the water.. so the savings is not much diffrent. most heaters come with a 6 yr warranty on tanks and 1 on eletric parts gas also is 6 but only on the tank(no eletric) gas is seprate and more expensive when u go to buy one to make the change... if it was me i would stay with eletric... good luck

Gas is much more effecient than electric, but you must consider the cost of gas, propane over the cost of electric. Gas for me cooks much faster than electric. Propane is the best for hot water and cooking but cost way more than that of city gas or electric. It's up to you.

If you have gas available, I would switch. I am a gas kinda guy, heater, stove, dryer. I think it is more affordable and efficient.
But everyone has an opinion.
