In the final stages of highschool, it's customary to think about college. Looking back at their achievement during the school years, many students can't really be proud of their grades or the amount they learned. Do they think classes will be easier in college? Do they think they will do better in the future, even if they have been lazy so far? Do they think employers will want to recruit them just because they have some degree, even if they hardly remember anything from classes?

Contrary to what the answerers think, I've spent quite a while in college, and still can't feel how "priceless" an experience it's been. More independence and responsibility - yes, but it doesn't differ from highschool very much... back then I also had to turn in essays on time and pick myself up when something let me down, and the desire to drop everything and just have fun hasn't faded. I don't think the answerers understood what I meant to address.

Besides the education factor, college do teaches an individual other skills.
Independence cause most of us are away from home for the first time.
Time management cause there is that essay we gotta finish but we still do wanna have fun.
Networking cause we need those past year lecture notes or test guides from the seniors.
Self perseverance cause there are times when you feel depressed and have to pick ourself up.
Yeah you can say that you can practise these skills without going to college. I will tell you that it is going to be a bit more difficult. Where else can you find a high concentration of human besides at a college campus.
For me, I personally see that my degree will be my passport to my future working world. I can work in my related industry or I can just do something that interest me. At the end of the day, I still have my degree as a backup plan in case something happens in the future. A degree is definitely worth much more than a high school diploma.
A college experience is so priceless. You will always remember it for the rest of your life. I hope you do change your stance on having a college education.

Getting a college degree has become the norm in today's society. So most students are frowned upon if they are not considering higher education (which is sad because some individuals and jobs are just not right for higher ed.)
Another reason why students are starting to enter college more and more is because of pressure from parents. More and more students are raised by one or more parents with a college degree.
Some people also see higher education as a time to figure out who they are and what they want to do. (For those students, either take a gap year or go to a liberal arts college).
And yes there is the prestige and the average higher wages that come with having 2 or 4 year degrees.

From experience I can tell you that in alot of ways college is easier. I barely made it thru high school despite an IQ of 120. The constraints put on me were too much. I spent a year after high school working and finally went to college. I was always on the Deans List. I had more freedom to take classes that held my intrest. I didn't constantly have some one telling me where to go, where's your hall pass etc.

Look, college is way different than high school.....if you hated high school, you will like college.
I made grades good enough to get me on the "Janitor's List" in high school, but made the Dean's List in college.
College is about discovering what you want to do with your life as far as a career is concerned. It makes a big difference between $6.00 an hr. and $15.00 an hour in wages. You don't want to be stuck with piss-ant jobs the rest of your life!
It is much easier to go on to college now than when you are older, how do I know? I did both !!

People want to go to college to pay too much money for a piece of paper so they can spend the rest of their life as a manager for Toy's R Us and be in debt for eternity.
But seriously... degrees seldom tell people what they are good at or what they can accomplish.
I am a technical writer and a profressional artist... yet I have no degree.
My father is an engineer and got kicked out of highschool.

If you ever want to do anything other than base physical labor or low-wage clerical positions, you need a college degree. Nobody cares how much you remember from classes. They care about that piece of paper. It's not that it represents learning. What that piece of paper shows is that you have the desire to move higher in life, that you're destined for greater things, that you can stick to it and do the job that needs to be done to go places in life. You're not going to college, I take it. Enjoy your factory/buger-flipping/$20,000 a year and under job.

the income gap between high school graduates and college graduates is huge, a person with a college degree (nearly any degree from an acredited institution) can have a shot at a professional or managerial position. someone with a high school degree will be flipping burgers or working construction for about 8-10 years until they even have a hope of reaching managerial status

For many, it's the fastest, easiest way to get out of the house, have your freedom, and still mooch off your parents. It's the best of both worlds. Go to class, work a little part time job, then go out all night and spend all your minimum wage money on partying, because your parents are paying for room, board, and food. Sounds like heaven to me!
