well this is really a personal choice question. Dell computers seem to have the best warranty policy. Hp have very good quality and performance , but then again so does Dell. What you ahve to consider is regardless of who you buy it from what is there policy on maintaining it when it breaks. I have worked for most major brands at one time or another in a home support fashion and have seen that Dell offers the best warranty on their product.
Where to purchase, Myself I prefer online as there are more customizable options available online versus the stores.
Best workhorse computer I would say an HP. Best Gaming machine Alienware hands down but you are gonna pay for it. Best Technical support would be none as they all use foreign based tech houses. Best repair policy Dell. Hope this helps

Computer brand are just sticker that company put on their desktop case and no more than that.
talk about HP and DELL huh?
well only labels
if you look inside the case the components are produced by
ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, ABIT
and those are the real computer maker.
I suggest you to assemble a computer with ASUS because of their performance, quality, reliability and compatibility.
and its way cheaper to do it your self. If you dont know how look over internet. its easy to find information.
Or maybe find a good local computer store NOT like THE SOURCE or BEST BUY. They will help you customize your compute with components from ASUS. ASUS are the best in computer, I built few for myselft, friends and other people and they are extremely happy with it. By the way, don't take ATI chipset video card.
good luck

Strong suggestion: get a custom computer built for you. Totally upgradeable, easier to maintain, no 120 extra trial ware junk installed to cause conflicts, and the resale value is higher. Plus, if any hardware dies, just goto the nearest computer shop and get a replacement (and most hardware now -- if you can install a light bulb you can install the hardware). Fumbling with a cellphone or DVD recorder is more complicated than adding hardware.
Reason I'm starting this is because proprietary computers use crappy parts -- they have to to make a profit (very thin profit margin on computers now). Have a relative who's in the hardware/network repair business for 25 years and you don't want to know how many proprietary computers come in to be serviced for hardware failure. :( The Dell server I had it's DRAC card failed only three days after it was online, for example. Now I just build them and not go through all the RMA crap -- and zero problems.
But if you're bent on getting a proprietary rig, I strongly suggest one from Asus (they have the best motherboards in the world -- check any hardware review). Their laptops are creme de creme (tech relative swears by them as they upgrade well and have good options for the price -- white box Centrino for under $1000 with extras). Their video cards are one of the best, too. Can't go wrong with Asus.
The techs will thank you too, as they like working on quality computers (think a VW vs a BMW).

Depend on your use and budget. There are no "perfect computers". Some computer at 500$ at radioshack (like your HP) can satisfy you. Personnaly I need a videocard at that price (500$) so obviously I can't be satisfied by those HP. I have a dell laptop and a custom-built-by-me computer. I heard good comments about dell computers
What's good also with Dell is the fact that you can customize it to your needs (bigger hard drive, faster CPU, more ram, etc.)

I'd recommend Dell or HP. They're the most common and most competitively priced retailers out there - usually with excellent support.

Apple or Fujitsu. Buy them at a store near you so you can get accessories and service. Get the extended service warranty as well.
Apple software is easier to use. Fujitsu comes with a built-in card reader.
;-D They both rock. OSX is a better OS IMHO. You can get Linux on the Fujitsu.

If money isn't an issue, I highly recommend Alienware. They will custom build to your specs and make sure it's all working right. If money is an issue, buy a Dell online.
