there should be a special kind of glue at the local automotive shop, it should be called something like rear view mirror kit.

When the car is left in the heat of the sun, refrain from adjusting the rear view, as in most cases this is when it can be broke loose. When you clean the circle of glass where the metal part is attached to, apply the glue to both glass and metal, press in place and be prepared to hold for more than a minute. Then leave that tombstone looking metal overnight, and attach the mirror in the cool morning.

epoxy resin glue worked for me, get it from a model shop. but it depends on the size of the rear view mirror, you could also sweet talk your local windscreen repair company,. halfords and some motor factors sell patches that sometimes work, but there a bit 50/50.
make sure your windscreen is as clean and grease free as possible (use vinegar to clean it) and clean as much crap off the mirror plate as you can.
good luck mate

Adhesive.

yes super glue is the cheapest way to go but make sure the surface your applying it to is clean , and only put the glue ( and not to much of it ) on one surface i.e , the windscreen or the mirror . good luck .

Have you ever heard of banana tapes. Their like sticky tapes that you peel off to reveal two sticky sides!
I'm not sure if it'll work...but you could try!
