Cars have cam shafts
They are flat oval shapes placed on a shaft that are used to open and close valves in an engine.
Imaging a shaft rotating with cams attached. When the sticky out bit of the cam rotates round it pushes against the valve forcing it down. This opens the valve to let air into the engine. As the cam rotates further the sticky out bit turns around letting a spring return the valve to its closed position. Meanwhile another cam is doing a similar thing further along.

A cam changes rotational movement into a sliding movement.
example; a cam (shaped oval )turns around a shaft. resting on the cam is a rod. as cam turns the rod is moved up and down vertically. this pushes and pulls what ever the rod is attached to.
