Nothing your body does is for no reason. Itching, pain, dizziness, twitching, swelling, everything your body does is for you to know there is a problem in a certain area and you need to do something about it. If you didn't feel pain, you could not give notice to scratches and bumps which would damage your body in the long run. Itching means you have a certain problem wherever it itches...it could be an invisible infection, it could be underlying blood clotting, cells could be repairing a muscle and itching is an effect, anything could be possible. I have a certain rash which doesn't go away which itches me when I get hot, it means I have an infection and I need to treat it.

Not washing enough, washing with the wrong soap etc which causes dry skin and itching, scabies (to check for this, look around the finger webs and you will see tiny burrows in the skin), eczema (which would be visible), liver problems. A poor diet and can also make you itch as the body is trying to excrete extra toxins through the skin.

Best wishes!

Skin does not itch for no reason!! If it itches, there has to be a reason why, dry skin is the most likely, allergies maybe. Buy a good skin moisturizer, that should help.

.. coming down off heroin causes a lot of itching, as does scabies, allergic reactions and contact with chemicals, detergents... possibly a reaction to washing powder.

If it's just a little itch, this can be caused by dead skin cells building up and needing to be brushed away by scratching.

I found that I used to have this problem a lot, and it was driving me to distraction, especially at night when trying to go to sleep. A massage therapist suggested it could be linked to lymph system slugishness. I had a very sedentary job and wasn't doing much exercise at the time. I found that once I got into regular walking and exercise, the problem gradually resolved - and if it comes back it has been after a longish period of too much inactivity, so it is an extra reminder that I need to get walking and exercising regularly again!
