As a nurse, I would tell the doctor he has to speak to the parents. The parents deserve to know exactly what happened to their child. The consequences for the doctor would in all likelihood be a law suit along with everyone else in the room and the hospital. The consequences for the parents would be having to live with the fact that they delivered a healthy baby and by someone's mistake their child is dead. I truly hope this is not true and is just a hypothetical question.

This is a horrible scenerio - but I suppose one that has & will happen. I suppose I would tell the husband/patient the truth - as hard as that would be & I certainly would hope the doctor would have the moral integrity to do the same & support that decision.... otherwise I would think he is in breech of his medical obligation. I don't see where the legal issues would affect you as the nurse - wouldn't that fall under the OB's malpractice?? The consequences to the parents & doctor are for them to deal with - but the consequences YOU would pay are for you to deal with & if you don't tell the truth then YOU'RE the one who would have to carry that guilt & the consequences that go along with it... You're in a tough situation - prayers to you!

You have to tell the truth even knowing the parents are gong to be dwvastated and you will have to tell the trut when they sue, BUt first and foremost that mom is going to need someomne to comfort her. The loss of a child is a very hard thing to deal with I have been there. You almost cannot console a parent when they are given the news that a child is gone or cannot live . They gave me valium because I wanted todie. So make sure mom and dad have someone the can lean on Please. Once they can think clearly the docotor will pay but the parents need a strong support sysytem for a blow like that. May God bewith all of you

OMG that would be horrible. First they have to tell the parents exactly what happened, and then the parents would definitively sue the dr and hospital for malpractice. The consequences for the parents : they would be devastaded and probably would win the suit. The dr's licence would probably be removed or cancelled for a long time (I hope lifetime) . This would be just an awful situation.

Tuff question, but I've unfortunately had to deal with it, you have an obligation to the doctor, yet, one to the patient, and a legal one. In your mind you must determine which one is most important. A lie can never be forgotten or forgiven. Determine what you can live with, if the situation will be challenged in a court of law and weather or not you are willing to tell the truth. It's your decision. I would not like to be in your shoes.

Why was the mother in the Operating Room having a vaginal birth? If she was in the OR, she would have been having a c-section, and it's impossible for the baby to come out of the incision itself.
Thank God for malpractice insurance...

1st of all whatever you do don't cover it up no matter how many threats you get. Go to court and tell the truth. If you tell 1 lie then you have to tell another one and another one. And it will keep mounting until eventually you'll be arrested for a cover up and it's not worth losing your career behind the lies. Be honest. If you lie about the entire ordeal I promise you, it will haunt you for the rest of your life. That includes a lot sleepless nights.

The truth should be told and there is a distinct possibility that the parents would sue the hospital and the doctors and be entitled to a judgement.

I'm sure the nurse knows procedure in this case. The doctor is responsible as the death was preventble. The hospital and doctor should be sued for malpractice.
