My record is 4 months when it was a cool autumn, I put it on a wicker chair and kept it out of direct sunlight. But, I admit it was really starting to get soft on the bottom. Every year we buy one fresh off the vine to see how long we can keep it. The average is 2 1/2 months, but when it is hot it has been as short as 2-3 weeks.

How about this. Today is March 24th, 2014. My brother gave it to me in early OCTOBER, 2013. Let's see that's more than 5 months so far and still going The weird thing is that this pumpkin is not small in any way. It's like 18 inches tall and fat too. It has been sitting on a buffet in front of a window where it's cool and not too sunny. We have been documenting this thing with pictures because my brother had gotten 15 of them and passed them out. Mine is the only one still around. So he is amazed. My boyfriend has even named it.(at the moment I cannot remember it though). This is not the first pumpkin I had for a long time. But I believe it may be the one that has lasted the longest.

All good answers.
If displaying outdoors, do not put directly on the ground. And place out of direct sunlight.
Check the pumpkin carefully for any small holes or cracks. Buy the freshest pumpkin with the least marks on the skin.
It should last well to Halloween, depending of course on where you live and how warm your temp still is. Here in TX, it will be mid-Oct before I buy pumpkins for outdoors. The gourds are available now and they will do fine now...

I have a spaghetti squash (in the same family as pumpkin) and it has been at least 3 months....eventually the outside will have a soft spot and it will go rotten. Last year my pumpkins from halloween outside lasted about 2 and a half months.

Our pumpkin has been sitting out on our patio since October of 2013. It was going to be carved for Thanksgiving with my grand daughter but when she returned from Texas it was in mid December.Everyday it gets the afternoon sun for about 4 hours. I am thinking about naming him because he has kind of grown on me and I hate to throw him away now. I just wanted to see how long it will be before he rots and I have no choice. But we do live in Las Vegas and have no humidity. It might be a record.

You can keep in a warm and dry environment for two to six months.
Here is a link you might like on how to carve one.
