We want to plant trees and maybe hardscape, is it better to do it in the fall for the health of the trees, as well as more affordable prices

I work at a landscape company, and the best time to hire is fall for an early to mid spring install. In spring, we finish what job were cut short by winter and start any jobs that were projected as late fall but never started. The opposite can work, too. You could set up in the spring for a fall install. Landscapers are always looking for that job that's going to get them through fall until shutdown time.

Definitely late fall or early winter. Landscapers are usually slower and will
give better prices and maybe do a better job because they're not so stressed
to get to the next job.. The only drawback might be that some plants might
not be available at that time. But that's o.k. You can leave those spaces
bare and they can come back when they are available and plant. Of course
with hold some payment to make sure they come back. But keep in mind
the hard work is already done - soil prep, edging, mulch etc. so you must
pay for that at that time. Be fair on the negotiation. Enjoy for the spring.

When to Plant Trees

Climate plays a deciding role when determining the appropriate planting time. Newly planted trees do best when exposed to moderate temperature and rainfall and they need time to root and acclimatize before the onset of intense heat and dryness of summer or the freezing temperatures of winter. Spring and fall, therefore, are generally the best planting seasons. In the southern United States, however, which do not experience an intense winter, planting can take place during the winter months. Palm trees are an exception: they are best planted in the warmer, summer months.

For grass, it's fall, plain and simple.

Winter is probably the best time. Landscapers in colder climates are out of business. You can plan what you want done for the spring then line up a contractor at your convenience. If you wait until spring or fall, you may have difficulty finding someone to do the work as many contractors have committed their time.
Depending on what you want done, the contractor can advise you as to when the work should be done.

Fall is the best time. Late fall Nov. to Feb. is the time to plant trees. You have to plant them when they are dormant. Your springs bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and crocus are planted in the fall. You also need to plant your perennials now for a big show next spring. Grass is best when planted in the fall also. The seeds need the cool weather at first and you won't have to water so much.
