Really depends on where on your back you'll have it and how big it is. Some parts of the back have (way) less flesh and muscle, so will hurt more.
Second thing is the design. Is it a tattoo that will need a lot of coloring or is it mainly lines? Drawing the (out)lines is the part that hurts most. Coloring hurts much much less, since it's done in large parts.
Really large tattoos are normally not done in one go anyway.
You can take 2 Ibuprofen before having a tattoo done, it will take the edge off, since you'll feel more relaxed.

No, I have two on my back. One is on the upper right side and the other is on the lower left. I just took 3 Tylenol an hour before I went and drank some cold water during the process. You will fill a little pain at first but by the time they finish the outline the area is almost numb to the pain so the coloring ( if any ) should be a piece of cake.

I have a large tattoo on my back and shoulder. It would be foolish to say it didn't hurt but the pain is not that bad and after a while, you start to enjoy the feeling - thats why so many people go back for more and more tattoos. It gives you a bit of a high!!!! Mine took 5 1/2 hours and I was almost floating afterwards - but then I am a bit kinky so maybe it's just me!!
Go for it and enjoy!

Yes, getting a tattoo hurts a bit or a lot, depending on where you get it and how well you take pain. My ankle and shoulder tattoos hurt a bit, but bearable. My lower back tattoo hurt a lot, but I endured the pain for it. If your concern is more whether it is painful then whether you really want the tattoo, don't get one. Wait until you really want it more than you are afraid of the pain involved. I love my tattoos and don't regret them at all. I believe the pain was worth it.

Honey, it's a needle being pricked and scraped onto your skin (yes, it feels like scraping when they do the shading), so of course it's gonna hurt - you're getting a tattoo!!
Some parts of your body hurt more than others - where the skin is closer to bone, like your ankles for example. Your back shouldn't hurt as much (just try to avoid the spine area) but it will be more painful than a tattoo on your bum (that just tickles!)
But beauty is pain, and it's worth it.

I had one done about 4 inches below my neck across my back and yes it did hurt. But I wanted the tattoo so I put up with it. It depends on how much you want the tattoo. If you have a low pain threshhold and are even the slightest bit unsure then don't get it done - it's with you forever!

Depends on your pain tolerance I think. I had a lower back one done and was terrified on the day. He started and asked me how it was feeling. I asked when it would start hurting and he said that was it. It was uncomfortable yes but completely bearable. I was even able to talk to my brother on the phone while it was being done. The black outline feels the worse but the colour was just like an irritating scrape. They wipe it with a wet wipe every few seconds so this cools the skin down.
Hope this helps. I want another one now!!!

Well frankly all my tats hurt but how bad they hurt depending on where it was place... so it really depends on where on your back.
There's no way in heck I'm gutsy enough to get ink on my lower back over my spine. I'll pass on that pain.
The one on my back up near my shoulder didn't really hurt that bad and, honestly, was the least painful one I've had done.
The general rule of thumb is that the "meatier" the area, the less painful it is. So if you start wrapping around to ribs that'll start feeling a bit more uncomfortable.

I had one done just below my neck.
Anyone that tells you it dosn't hurt is lying. I had a second one done a few months ago....
My point being that it couldn't of hurt that much because I have just had another one done.
The best thing to do is ask the artist if he minds not putting any ink in the needle thingy. That way he can give you an example of how much its going to hurt.
That way you can see how it feels without having a perm line or dot if you can't handle the pain. (I hope you get my drift)
GOOD LUCK and don't forget you can't wash it off once its done so make sure you pick one that you like.... xx

Anywhere you put a tattoo is going to hurt. It all depends on where you put the tattoo. Middle back, you have a worry that the artist might stick you somewhere he is not suppose to and leave you paralized. I want one there but i am not so brave.
