Start by going through the boxes to which you are unaware of the contents. Throw away what you don't want, then organize and re-box the remainder in order of importance. Shuffle these boxes back into the mix. Then, decide which items you're least likely to need access to. Put these items in the furthest reaches of the room, away from high traffic areas, like a corner. Simply work your way backward, and ultimately you will want the items you use on a regular basis to be nearest the high traffic areas, such as doorways. For example, you would want to keep tools and such closest the doorway into the house, and the lawnmower nearest the garage door for easy access. Good Luck!

You could start by making "piles"; to keep, throw, give away.
This sounds silly but I start tackling a room by starting at one spot and working my way to the right until I've made a full circle. Once you've decided what stays you can organize with inexpensive shelving, color coordinated plastic storage bins (the least expensive I've seen are in department or "dollar" stores; ex:
red/green for Christmas, orange for Halloween decorations ). Once you've accomplished this task it'll be easy to keep up.

I would get large totes to store smaller items. For the larger Items drag them out. Lay everything outside of the garage so you can see what you have all at once. Once you see everything and put it into perspective, you can begin the selection process.
Sort things according to type, or season... whatever works best for you. If its something you don't like, have a yard sale to get rid of unwanted items.
Once you get everything sorted, arrange everything the way you'd like it.

pull everything out and try to sort in piles (maybe in your drive way)
Label 3 large containers. Keep, toss, good will(charity). It will go very fast.
Good luck. Happy cleaning
