it does depend on the country...but it averages about 2wks..after that you can start worrying...also you should not send money and valuable stuff by regular mail to or from the US....i'm had experiences of postal thieves...

if it's by DHL or UPS or any other fast service...you usually get within a few business days (shouldn't be more than 5 though)

Are you talking about something mailed through a post office? If so it usually takes about 5 days. Sounds fair to me but for faster service there is DHL or Fed Ex in most West African countries. If you're talking about the Internet it depends on the connection and the server that day and if there was no power outage (it happens sometimes...) but it's usually very fast, almost as fast as in the rest of the world sometimes.

from 2 weeks to 3 months, depends on the efficiency of the postal system, but it will at least take 2 weeks in air mail since planes to the USA usually need to pass through Europe (African airlines fly to Europe not USA direct). the 3 months means that your post got lost somewhere along the way and was (luckily found) and put back to the circulation.

I had post cards 2 months late from Brazil arriving to Ghana, but then some never did, so I think post coming in is a special problem, going out should be easier, one card from Burkina Faso reached London in one week, but that was a central post office in the capital Ouagagougou (these things matter).

If you are worried, go to the courier companies like FedEx or DHL, they are more expensive but for larger mail I'd suggest using them. For post cards, go to the capital's large post office, and say your prayers, it mostly goes where it should go.
