There is not an actual Tara. In the book, the O'Hara plantation was a close match to Margaret Mitchell's family home in the country. However, the plantation was sensationlized for the movie. Mitchell's family home is located near Jonesboro, Atlanta but unfortunately, there is no Tara to visit!

I once went to New Orleans, and the tour guide pointed out a house to us which was used for the external shots of Tara, but I don't know if that's also the one Margaret Mitchell based her book on.

The original Tara is in Ireland. Check with the Library of Congress' website at loc.gov and post your question to their forum. You will be pleasantly surbprised.
