Every time you open a word document or excel or any other item and make a change or addition, the change or addition is stored in another part of the memory from the original. The change is tagged as part of the original so when you open it up again the computer must look for all the tags to compile the item. When you defrag (de-fragment) the computer takes all the split up items and puts them back together as a single string. If your machine is too fragmented, it will be very slow opening up documents and files.
You should defrag on a regular basis to keep your computer running smooth. Not to mention regaining all the space needed for all those tag lines.

A DOS and Windows utility that defragments your hard disk.
Fragmentation refers to the condition of a disk in which files are divided into pieces scattered around the disk. Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files. At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous clusters. This is entirely invisible to users, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file.

In simple terms:
All the files accessed on your computer (documents, web sites, cookies, etc) are placed on your hard drive. As you add and delete material, the files will become jumbled around on your hard drive, causing spaces to occur between files. These spaces will slow your computer down because it takes longer to look for the files you need. This means your hard drive is fragmented. In order to arrange those files in a neat and orderly fashion, it requires that you defragment, or defrag, your hard drive. You should do so once a week at least.

A process (run by a defragging program) whereby parts of data files on all segments of a computer hard disk are taken from their fragmented state (with parts of files spread all over the disk), and grouped together in complete-file segments. This makes it quicker for applications to find the files they need and frees up disk space, making the computer run more efficiently.

take the example of a bachelors room ,if someone has to find something from it, it would take a long time to search for it .but if things are placed in a proper manner it would be easy to find.similarly in a computer things pertaining to a single file are stored in different locations in the hard disk, disk defrag would collect all the saved data of a single file and place them at one place ,so that it would be easy to retrieve that file and hence enhancing the performance of the system

the process of reordering file on your computer to make them more efficient.
By default, Windows stores data in any free spot available. So one file could be located in several differnt areas on the hard drive. When you defrag, you move all of the different parts of the file together in sequential order to make it easier for the computer to locate. This speeds up the overall performance of the computer.

the computer stores the data provided to it in(input )in random locations (usually on harddisk). So when you ask for some some information to the computer the has to reorganise the locations to present before u.This often takes time.when you defrag your computer from time to time the different data are placed insuccessive locations which makes it easier for the computer to reorganise data. That is why you say defragmentation makes the computer run fast.
