You are right about not finding out who you are by comparing yourself to oothers around you.
Here is a little excercise that I find gives a definitive way to discover yourself:
1. Close your eyes and think of a cat.
Get a picture of a cat in your mind. Any cat.
One you have seen or one you create.
2. Once you have done this ask yourself this question.
3. WHO is looking at that picture?

We are always on a journey to find ourselves. We're never fully sure of who we are. I started searching for myself when I was about 18. Then, I realized that I'm constantly going to change my mind about things, and I'm constantly going to grow and turn into a whole new person. So we can never really be certain of who we are. Just live life to the fullest and enjoy it all the way.

It's all in how you're raised. However, you can use the positive things you learned, drop the negative and build your own person. You can't blame your actions on your parents, as we all grow into adults some day and are held responsible for our own choices. I know who I am and I love me!!!

The best way is to connect with one's own heritage and purse that over and above others. Too often, people only look into other people's heritage.

Sitting comfortably eyes closed, deeply think, by consciously removing what was given to me, my body, name, name tags, ideas, knowledge, memory from sense organ inputs, etc, and trying to see deep within, what is left over, that which really is original , mine, me, and the 'I' !

The question doesn't strike me as right. I suppose what you really ask is what is there for you to do in life. To answer this question one must answer firstly if there is any purpose at all.

The way in which you handle yourself in difficult situations can say a lot about the type of person you are.
