Ebay has some fab formal dresses, made to measure for not much money. Probably even less than you would be to hire one. Check it out.

Not sure about hiring but the discount store TK maxx has lots of beautiful dresses for £20-£50. They are really nice too!

Salvation army... yeah, i know.. i didn't need to go there, but i found the CUTEST DRESS EVER!!! It was all black with satin, cut just above the knee.. and was a little dirty and loose....but after I washed it real good, and it dried.... it fit perfect and with my old amethyst necklace, i looked like 1 million bucks!!! But in such a good way.... they do have cheap stuff and SOME of it looks okay.. good luck. :) Now its my niece's... =((

go to ebay or clothes max and i tell you what if your lucky you might have a good will store near by ,you will be surprised what you find some of the stuff is junk and some is because people think it is out dated and tried of seeing it... i bought a dress there once and one thing i asked my husband a while ago is what did he like best about me when we 1st met... he said my smile and my dress....(good will)!! good luck

I used to know some girls at uni who used to do this... go buy a dress- be very carefull with it- then return 4 a refund it the day after your night out... simple!

Amazing kind of dresses handed into charity shops, you might be lucky to get really nice one and cheaply too but look really expensive

you could try george in asda or matalan, they are cheap but look fab!
