Ebay has some fab formal dresses, made to measure for not much money. Probably even less than you would be to hire one. Check it out.

Not sure about hiring but the discount store TK maxx has lots of beautiful dresses for £20-£50. They are really nice too!

Salvation army... yeah, i know.. i didn't need to go there, but i found the CUTEST DRESS EVER!!! It was all black with satin, cut just above the knee.. and was a little dirty and loose....but after I washed it real good, and it dried.... it fit perfect and with my old amethyst necklace, i looked like 1 million bucks!!! But in such a good way.... they do have cheap stuff and SOME of it looks okay.. good luck. :) Now its my niece's... =((

I used to know some girls at uni who used to do this... go buy a dress- be very carefull with it- then return 4 a refund it the day after your night out... simple!

I've never heard that type of phrasing before: hiring a dress. Do you mean buy? Or rent?

Amazing kind of dresses handed into charity shops, you might be lucky to get really nice one and cheaply too but look really expensive

What size? I have several formal dresses in larger sizes that I would be willing to part with.
