1.) The American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC) are a product of the days when there were rival professional leagues. The American Football League began I think in the 1960s as a more uptempo, higher-energy, showier, glitzier alternative to the more button-down National Football League (which had been around since 1919).
The two leagues merged in 1970, forming the AFC and NFC with three divisions within each conference. AFC and NFC teams do play each other in the regular season, but it's the champion of each conference who square off in the Super Bowl.
2. There really isn't one "best" team, but there are several very good ones. The New England Patriots (Foxboro, Mass.) won three Super Bowls in four years until last year, when the Pittsburgh Steelers won their franchise's fifth Super Bowl (so they're pretty good too). The Indianapolis Colts have been very strong in the regular season for the past few years but seem to lose a tough game in the playoffs every year. The Philadelphia Eagles went to four straight NFC conference championship games (which determines who will represent the conference in the Super Bowl) until last year, when things fell apart on them.
Everyone will have their favorite teams, of course, but those few should be a pretty objective view of some of the most consistent winners over the last few years.
3.) FOX and CBS carry the Sunday games, NBC carries one Sunday night game, and ESPN carries the Monday night game.
4.) I grew up a fan of the Green Bay Packers. Watching them suck big-time all through the '80s really helped me appreciate their newfound "glory years" of the 1990s, when they went to three straight NFC conference championship games, won two to go to two Super Bowls and won one of those.
