There are huge differences in size between the largest and the smallest bones in the body. The largest (up to 20 inches (50cm) long in adults) is a long bone called the femur. It is found in the thigh or upper leg and is long and string because it has to support the body's weight when we stand or move. The smallest ( 0.2 inches/5mm) is an irregular bone called the stirrup. It is shaped like a horse rider's stirrup and is located inside the ear to help us hear sounds

The smallest bone in the human body is known as the Stapes or Stirrup bone which is part of a group of three bones known as auditory ossicles and are attached to the tympanic membrane of the inner ear. The three bones which make up this group are:
Malleus or Hammer
Incus or Anvil
Stapes or Stirrup
Their names are drawn from the fact that each of the bones loosely resembles the objects after which they are named.

The smallest bone is the stirrup bone inside the ear.

Sound is collected by the pinna (the visible part of the ear) and directed through the outer ear canal. The sound makes the eardrum vibrate, which in turn causes a series of three tiny bones (the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup) in the middle ear to vibrate.
