RAM is Random Access Memory. It is a volitile memory that is erased thousands of times per second and is lost when the computer is turned off.

People often say "I need more memory" they are referring to hard drive space which is permanent storage. It is where your files are saved.

All computers have memory. That's how they "know things" :D. But not all memory is the same so it's not used in the same way. The basic concept is: the faster it is the more it costs and the less you have.
The cheapest kind is in HDD's (hard disk drive = your computer's long term memory, this is not lost when you turn the computer off, and is where all your programs and data are stored), and with it you get tons of space at a resonable price.
Above that is RAM (Random Access Memory = the PC's short term memory, that is lost when the power is turned off, and is where the computer keeps programs that are running now).
Even faster than RAM is the Processor Cache (L2, L1 = Level X where the lower the faster the memory). Cache is used to store data that the computer is curently processing.

Hope that helped. If you want to learn more about PC memory check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM

it is random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly;. There are two basic types of RAM:

dynamic RAM (DRAM)
static RAM (SRAM)

The two types differ in the technology they use to hold data, dynamic RAM being the more common type. Dynamic RAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second. Static RAM does not need to be refreshed, which makes it faster; but it is also more expensive than dynamic RAM. Both types of RAM are volatile, meaning that they lose their contents when the power is turned off.

RAM is Random Access Memory, and it comes in three variants:
SIMMs, DIMMs, & RIMMs. RAM is temporary memory that is erased if you shut down your computer, it doesn't hold anything permenatly. If you are looking to install more RAM on your computer, the RAM should be easy to spot on your motherboard. It's just around 2-4 sticks in their corresponding slots. I would recommend going to a repair shop for this if you aren't very computer savvy.
