I suppose its to do with their center of gravity being nearer their backs than their fronts. All things will try to get the center of gravity as low as possible, therefore the flies end up on their backs i.e. lower c.o.g. They are dead so they can't do anything about it.

its cos they are top heavy
with their wings so when they die
there legs collect inwards
which means their centre of gravity changes
and they then topple as there wings now extend out
past where their legs once were.
so technically they dont die on their backs
they may die any which way but once dead
will always(MOSTLY) be on their backs

i have some of them sticky things that hang down, so my flies get their feet stuck so die on their feet!
if i get the fly spray out, mine fly in another room, so i think they are pretty smart here!

They dont. Theres a dead one in my house, still perched on the kitcken door like nothings wrong. And i think they die first, then FALL onto their backs.

flies have much more body then legs,so the ones i don't smoch with a 'swatter(ihate'em and spiders)tip over kerblooey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
