How to change the gray square face to an avatar
1.Click on your photo (gray smiley) this will take you to your Yahoo answers Q&A page.
2.Top section left is your yahoo answers information and at the bottom of this section you will see a link (edit my info) click this link.
3.On the next page scroll to the second section marked picture. This will give you three options – go to the last option you will see a link (get my yahoo avatar now) click the link.
4.Follow the directions in designing and saving your new avatar.
5.Return to your edit my info page and choose option 3 by clicking the little white dot
6.Scroll to the bottom of this page and click preview
7.Next page scroll down to the bottom and click ok.
Note that if you are wanting to put your own photo you will have to have a yahoo 360-profile page.

You can use a regular cartoon avatar or choose to use your own picture.
To use something other than the standard Yahoo avatar cartoon people you'll need a Yahoo! 360 account.
Here's specific instructions for both kinds of avatars.

If you want to use one of the cartoon 'avatars' then it's a two step process
1) Create your avatar
You can go here, http://answers.yahoo.com/my/my_edit
And in the "Picture" section, click on the "Edit my Yahoo! avatar" link
2) Display your avatar on Answers
You can go here, http://answers.yahoo.com/my/my_edit
in the Picture section, select "Use My Yahoo Avatar"
And, lastly, have a little patience. It is being reported by some users that the changes do not take effect immediately. They don't see the avatar option in Answers for a day or two.

If you want to use some other pic or a photo, then this requires a 360 account and this is a 3 step process.
1) You'll need to create your Yahoo! 360 account. http://360.yahoo.com
NOTE: Currently, you have to be 18 or older to get a 360 account.
So far, this is the only option if you want to use some other picture or photo.
The only three options for pics you have on your Answers profile is no pic, Yahoo avatar, or 360 picture.
2) You'll need to upload one or more pictures to your 360 page.
On your 360 page, select "My Page" from the top
Select "Edit Personal Photos" on the left hand side
Browse to your saved photo(s) (assuming you have one or more ready) to upload it.
This link will take you there http://upload.360.yahoo.com/edit/photos
Select the "Set as Primary" button next to the photo want displayed on other sites (like Answers) and select "Save"
3) You'll need to display your 360 picture on Answers
Go to your "My Q&A" page, select "Edit My Info"
In the "Picture" section, select "Use my Yahoo! 360 Picture"

I think you have to sign up for a Yahoo 360 account. then use your Yahoo 360 account pic as your pic for yahoo answers.
