haha, I can't believe someone said the Earth has four hemispheres! Hemi means half, so with 4 hemispheres we'd have two spheres: now that'd be an interesting place to live!

As to the actual original question: it's a saying. It probably originated from when people believed the Earth was flat. It's just stuck because you can say 'to all four corners of the Earth', but if you use a sphere you have to use 'over all the surface of the Earth' which isn't as catchy.

Orgininally the statement was the 4 quarters of the earth (meaning that there are 4 halfs of 2 hemispheres). The phrase has just changed over time, and some people now say 4 corners.
At least that is my hypothesis!

Apparently the book of revelation, chapter 7, verse 1, says the following about the shape of the Earth:

"After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree."

surely if the earth is split into north and south hemispheres, east and west hemispheres. the globe consists of two spheres. this makes sense initally until you try dividing it further into near and far foreign and local you begin to realise that the earth is infinite and therefore that it only has four corners is a paradox that was imposed when the first map was drawn. atlases have changed this situation slightly but if you glue all the pages of an atlas side to side you can prove that there are only four corners neccessary.

Absolutely no idea!!! But I seriously don't think it actually has four corners, how could anyone possibly know that? Well apart from Oliver Cromwell who said it's round. I think it's always going to be one of those questions that know one really knows but have alot of fun guessing!!!

The saying refers to a map of the world. It doesn't really have four corners, they sorted that one out in mediaeval times.
