I have been living in the UK for over 10 years - half of it in school/university campus and I have not been in 1 address for more than 3 years. I earn a steady income, have no credit histories (after checking my credit score), registered with electoral list and have accounts at HSBC and Halifax already. I have tried applying for cards online and have been unsuccessful so many times - why? Could it be that HSBC are not sharing my good credit information with other banks that I have applied with?

Thats all well and good but what you don't say is what country you are from?
Could this have anything to do with it? ( I know it shouldn't but everything else seems ok)

I have only been living in the UK for 14 months - AND I am a working holiday maker on a Visa which means I legally can't stay here for more than two years. I got a credit card from HSBC after having a bank account with them for only 8 months!!
It sounds like they are just being difficult - maybe you don't earn enough money, but I only earned £18,000 salary when I applied for mine. With HSBC you don't apply online anyway, you need to set up an appointment with a banking consultant and go into the branch and meet with them to discuss it. Then they'll give you one for sure, or at least tell you why you can't get one...

It's probably because you don't have a credit history that there's a problem.
You can probably get a credit card via the HSBC - or even get a small loan from your bank; short 'n' small but enough to give you a credit history. Pay it off properly and all might well be good.
But also; check out your credit score and history - see if you and/or your house has been black listed.

HSBC is the 2nd largest bank in the world and they can't divulge credit information on their clients cause it breaks the data protection act in this country also the fact u aint lived anywhere for more than 3 yrs wil affect it too try going into the bank instead of doing it online good luck

Because you have no credit history. To get a credit card you need a credit history eg something on finance etc. This shows the credit card company that you have been making regular payments. Trust me leave the credit card alone, its a rip off.

The people who lived in your house before may have blacklisted it which can stop you getting credit. a good idea is to start with a credit card from your bank to build your rating then larger companys are more likely to accept you once they hae seen you are good at makin repayments.

because you have no credit. You need to find a card that will help you build good credit. I'm not sure where to go to find that but go to your bank. That's the best way. I mean right into the bank..not online. Good luck!!

could be because of the people you're working for. Creditcard companies trust larger corperations esp. if you work in the banking branch. If not, the problem here is that you have no history I suppose. I'm 18 and got mine in 2 weeks in the mail. Sorry to hear.

It could be that they think that you are stretched. Also, the more you apply the more they think you're in financial trouble. You could apply for your credit file and tell for sure what is recorded on your credit file. Contact experian and equifax - they are the two largest credit reference agencies in the UK.
