There are wonderful choices in both Northern and Southern Ca
In Northern Ca, I would recommend the following:
Auberge Du Soleil in Napa Valley or the newer Carneros Inn or Meadowood
There is also the Ventana Inn as well as the Post Ranch Inn (Central coast)
In So. Cal, you will find great properties in Dana Point, like the Ritz Carlton, The St Regis and others

Take the Pacific Highway north of San Fransisco to Little River and stay at the Little River Inn - fantastic especially the annex overlooking the ocean. For the height of luxury check out The Ahwahnee in Yosemite Park..

California is big. So check out the websites below from Frommers. This limits the choice to make it easier.
1) Luxury hotels link
2) Family hotels and resorts link

I heard the Hotel California is pretty good, although you can check out anytime you like, you can never leave.
They have a few nice touches like mirrors in the ceilings and pink champagne on ice should you require them too.

I had a wonderful time at the Ritz...but for abit of variation (or depending on your style) the Trump Towers is also a good place!
