My friend is in her late 50's and does not think she can stand her low paying exhausting job much longer. She is intelligent but circumstances have forced her to work and keep working. Would she get a job as she could not survive on welfare?

She should do it now. The way things are going no one will ever get to retire and she will become physically unable to do her job. Try to get her into a lighter job, even if the pay is not much more at least she will be capable of the work.

If a woman in her 80's can go to college and get a degree, your friend can change her job and even her career if she really wants to. You are never too old to do anything you really want to do.
