I have to go for an amnosentisis and I told the Doc I dont think I want to know the results and he told me I probably should know incase I wanted to abort. Is it right for him to say that. It kind of upset me. I am 19 weeks pregnant. My BABY has a heartbeat and I watch it move on the scans. I am young so Im not really worried about the results Im just wondering should a doctor have the right to suggest an abortion if the child is unhealthy?

yes he didnt come right out with you have to. Its just the way he said it like a hint. He didnt give me no other options just that one. I think there doing it because I took Bc pills for 6 weeks untill I found out I was pregnant. And yes I will deal with whatever child God decides to give me.

I would have been furious! Not to mention that abortions after the first trimester aren't even legal. I am like you, I would not have wanted to know either.

the doctor didn't suggest you have an abortion, he said in case you want an abortion. Nothing there suggesting an abortion. If you are young why are you having this test done anyway? Unless there are high genetic risk factors don't get the test if you are worried about the outcome. Hinted, you really shouldn't read too much into what the Doctor said, he is just giving you all the options available which is two keep the baby or don't and I don't believe he was hinting that the choice should be an abortion.
How can you outright say no to an abortion when you don't even know the results? What if your baby (god forbid) has severe retardation or mutations are you prepared to care for this person for the rest of your life? That is what you must be prepared to do.

A lot of women want to take that into concideration. Maybe he could have put it a different way to be more sensitive to someone who wont have one no matter what, but a lot of people believe that an unhealthy child is unfair to the child and themselves. I personally wouldnt get an abortion unless one of us were sure to die at delivery, even then Im not positive I could do it, but he's trying to be a doctor in today's world when that is a major option. ANYWAY I hope you have a super healthy, happy pregnancy and baby! Thoughts are with you
adding - ABORTIONS are legal if there is something wrong with a child and it is found after the second trimester, it is the only exception for partial birth abortions

It's a crazy world we live in. Perhaps the doctor is concerned that if he doesn't mention the option of abortion that he could sued if the test turned up something abnormal. On the other hand, I am sure that there are doctors who are against abortion who would never suggest abortion as a possibility. A moral dilemma.
Hard to get, but a terrific song" Danny's Downs" by Michael Kelly Blanchard (the entire CD is good.)

I just have to ask...have you had your triple or quad markers done yet? It's a blood test that determines the chances that you might carry a baby with certain birth defects. If the results of the blood test looks as if you have a high chance of carrying a baby with say, downs syndrome, for example, then they will want an amnio. Amnio's are far more accurate because they take a fluid sample from the amniotic sac which has living cells floating around in there from the baby.
Because amnio's involve taking cells directly from the fluid, they are far more accurate than any ultrasound. In an u/s you see the baby swimming around, the heartbeat, and all that fun stuff...but the amnio detects what you don't see...the genetic side of it all. So yes, the baby LOOKS healthy, but genetically, is he/she really healthy?
The doctors SAY that you have the option to terminate the pregnancy because there are some mothers out there who want the perfect child. One free of any birth defects or genetic disorders...Flawless. Some who couldn't comprehend bringing a baby into the world with complications such as those and think it's cruel to give birth to a child that they know wouldn't be able to live a happy or healthy lifestyle. Or maybe they just don't want to take the time to care for a child with extensive needs such as those. I don't know. But there ARE women who choose to do this.
I personally, don't agree. My blood tests came back normal when I was pregnant. But while we were waiting for the results of the blood test, I knew if there was any question that we would have an amnio done too. I told myself that instead of killing my baby because of it's imperfections, I rather educate myself so when the baby came, I would have a better understanding of his/her needs...what to expect...and what to do.
But if you don't want to know the results, then that's fine. If you're really willing to accept your child for the way he/she is, then maybe you should know the results. That way there, you have time to prepare yourself and your family if your child will have special needs. Not only that, but it will give you time to accept your baby for who he/she is.
Congratulations and Good Luck!

It sounds like your doctor is old school. Back in the older days, if they knew that a child would be born with birth defects, they would strongly encourage the patient to have an abortion. My doctor told me that an amniocentisis was my decision, and I've already turned it down. Down Syndrome runs in my family, but I'm like you, I will love whatever child God blesses me with, so you may want to consider changing doctors. After all, you can refuse an amnio if you so choose. Good Luck, and God bless!

You have the right to refuse the amnio.
I was 21.5 when i got pregnant. DH and i decided we would keep the baby regardless so we didn't want the test. My obstetrician told us anyway that because i was so young, the risk for the baby and I of HAVING the amnio was greater than the chances of my baby having Down Syndrome and whatever else they test.
You do NOT have to have the test. Your dr needs to give you ALL the facts, that includes about whether it is worth having the test or not. I see no reason to have an invasive test if you don't want the results and wouldn't act on them anyway.

No, it is not unethical. You, as a mother-to-be has a right to know if your child is going to be healthy or not, and it is his job to tell you what he thinks is wise to do in any situation! he only suggested an abortion should the child be unhealthy, because think about it logically...you can stop the child's suffering by allowing it to never be born..it might sound cruel, but imagine giving birth to a child you know is going to suffer from the day it is born? would you want that pain for your child??? to hear the child's cries of pain and agony every single day, and you won't be able to do anything about it? and then your child dies... it might have upset you, but the doctor was truly thinking for the benefit of you and your child. should your child be severely ill now and you abort before birth, it will certainly give you an ache in your heart... BUT if you give birth to this severely ill child who later dies after immense suffering, your pain will be much greater.

I dont think he was suggesting it, as much as letting you know that you CAN do it, as in giving you the option of it. Some people don't feel how you feel, they feel if they had a child with any abnormalities, they would want to terminate the pregnancy.
Good for you that you are ok with dealing with whatever comes your way,. that is very sweet. Good luck, I still tho, would want to know the results. just so you know what to expect that;'s alll. it may be totally fine too.

It's as simple as refusing the amnio! You don't have to take these tests. They aren't necessary AND can endanger your baby. Tell the doc to bugger off and refuse. I'm 40 and have never allowed this test to be done, even with my age, and due with #8 anytime. Since I'd never abort, there's no point in taking the risk of possibly causing a miscarriage. You do have rights!

It's the doctors responsibility to say that. That's great that you want to keep the baby, but some women would choose to have an abortion if they found out that something was horribly wrong with their baby.
