Asters are great for late colour, and will flower every year. The old flower heads left on hydrangeas give colour through the winter, or red and yellow coloured stems on various varieties of deciduous dogwoods (Cornus)

Winter Pansies, conifers, Christmas's roses. Try the local garden centres for the best advice, plus they are usually cheaper.

Ornamental cabbage or winter pansies are great to keep color in your garden. There are also some shrubs that turn red or yellow and never drop their leaves that are great.

Ornamental kale & cabbage will do it.
Also, Chinese Lanterns (now blooming in my garden), offer a bold, pumpkin-orange color. Another lasting one is "silver dollar" plant; they reseed. It's also called "lunaria," for it's silvery moonglow effect. These are the larger, bolder plants.
Winter pansies and hellebores are more colorful but less striking, less "sculptural."

Petunias and mums will give you a great show. plus the mums will bloom again in the spring. Just cut them back after the blooms die and they keep multiplying and growing again and again.
