I do my own ironing and I'm pretty good at it, but when I send my shirts off to a laundry, they come back pressed far, far more effectively than I can ever achieve. Do they have special machines for this? Do they use more steam, or higher temperatures? How can I achieve the same effect?

they have powerful jet stream irons. i used to work in a laundry
and was a fivestar fabric technician. the secret to finishing your
garnents to perfection is.
once you've pressed a certain part of the garment, leave the fabric on the board until it has cooled and repeat this method all over. trust me it works

They have huge steam presses that are the shape and size of the ironing board. It is really neat to watch them work.
They slip the shirt, pants or what ever over the board part and lower the huge steam iron down on it for a few seconds. It comes out flat as a pancake. And the professionals that work the machine are so fast and accurate. It is totally amazing.

Many of them have a pressing machine which is almost like an ironing board except it has a top on it, the bottom is where the clothes are laid, and when the top is pressed down on them with a high amount of steam and heat the clothes are pressed.

if you have to wear a shirt everyday and like them crisp, get some spray starch.. you can get it from most supermarkets or places like boots chemists... it's only about £1 per can and works wonders... they'll be just like the laundry service in the hilton afterwards..

also don't use an iron thats too hot, it destroys the fabric of your shirt...

the iron used in a laundry is different from the home type. it is heavier and also very hot. and of course many years of experience.
