Female swimming pool attendant - because she would be expected to work in the women's changing room around naked women.
This is a basic answer - there is a section of the Sex Discrimination Act which explains it further, which I'm sure you will know.

The Miltary - specifically Army and Marines. There are MOS (Military Occupational Specialties) which are off limits to females. One of them is Armor (Specifically Tanks). Females are not permitted to use that MOS; the Army has NEVER allowed women to serve in these positions, and as it attributes this to the National Defense of the United States, it is exempt from this blatant discrimination.

In the arts - actors, actresses, models, singers etc - they are exempt as the gender is specific to the role they will fulfil. Likewise certain medicial/caring roles can specify gender on grounds of the personal nature of the tasks they will undertake. Certain sports, because they have male and female teams - i.e. a woman's football team playing in a woman's league. Certain positions in the armed forces. Pupils for single sex schools and a few Oxbridge colleges....

What you are referring to in law is what is called Genuine Occupational Qualification.(GOQ)
In the theatre, for example, when a pantomime is performed the "principle boy" is played by a female and the "dame" is played by a man. This is allowed under the common law of custom and practice. In real terms it means that it is traditional for this to happen and has done so for many years. In more contemporary theatre, television or film obviously a man is played by a man and a woman is played by a woman.
In certain occupations such as care work for vulnerable people such as young girls living in a female only hostel can be cared for by women only, under this rule.
I have given you two practical examples instead of one. to emphasise the different applications of the law in this area.
I hope this helps.

Police employed civilian staff who work within the cell areas of police stations are jobs which are classed as having a genuine occupational requirement with regards to the gender of the applicant. This is because part of the role is to perform searches of the detainees clothes and occasionally their bodies. Therefore it is lawful for the employers to advertise for either male or female applicants depending on their requirements.
Hope this helps

Some social work positions may specify that only women can apply for a job, especially if it is to support something like rape victims. I've seen jobs adverts specifying that the applicants can only be bangladeshi women, now that's a double discrimination (racial and sexual) but in the position to be fullfilled they wanted somebody who can support bangladeshi women, so in this case the discrimination acts don't apply.

Sex discrimination is allowed in theatrical productions for authenticity.....so for example in a production of Romeo and Juliet the producer could legitimately insist on auditioning only female actresses for the part of Juliet.

Any job where health and safety concerns of the service users override the legal stipulations of sexual discrimination. ie, a woman's refuge, rape crisis worker (for women), go to the governments website and type in sexual discrimination exemption and you should get more info.

There are many residential care jobs that are exempt due to the requirement of sleep-ins. These are mainly in the field of mental health care.
