I go to Nassau Community College and classes just started. Due to a severe toothache, I missed 3 classes. I'm worried about what my professors would say. Most of them are a pain in the butt regarding attendance. I've emailed most of them but some don't have an email address. I'm reluctant to talk on the phone. I've done the assignments that are due and have asked if I can fax them the work. I don't know if they'll accept the excuse. What should I do?

I can't go to the dentist until several days from now due to my insurance----they have to give me doctors who accept my insurance.

Get a prescription for a strong painkiller (Codein based) and, if you can, an antibiotic. Most dentists will not operate until the infection is dealt with first.

That should make it possible to attend classes. I am sorry that your professors are so unsympathetic about genuine illness but you have every right to expect their help if you are genuinely unable to attend - a doctor's note would help.

When I was sick and had to miss class, I gave my professor a doctor's note. Technically, if you provide your professor with a doctor's note, he/she must allow the absences. However, just sending an e-mail or calling wouldn't be enough. Pretty much, you need to give your professor proof of your illness through a doctor's note.
